William Saliba returns to Arsenal after talks with Saint-Etienne collapse

Arsenal's talks with Saint-Etienne over an extension to William Saliba’s loan collapsed on Tuesday night.

Saliba joined the Gunners last summer for £27million, but was loaned back to Saint-Etienne for the season.

Though the Ligue 1 season was cancelled, Saliba had hoped to extend his stay at St-Etienne and play in the rescheduled Coupe de France final against Paris-Saint Germain.

But talks collapsed with the French club claimed in a statement last night that Arsenal were "imposing absolutely unacceptable financial conditions."

Mikel Arteta had hoped an extension would be agreed.

“I think he needs to stay there. We’ve got an agreement with Saint-Etienne, he’s been over there all year,” the Arsenal boss said on Tuesday afternoon.

“He has earned the right to play in that final if the manager wants to do that. I think we have to give him the opportunity to do that, to enjoy that and we can have him after that.

Saliba is unable to play for Arsenal this season, but can train at the club.
