William Saliba could force Raul Sanllehi and Edu to make decision about two Arsenal players

William Saliba will finally return to Arsenal at the end of the season, a year after completing his move to the Emirates.

The French defender rejected interest from a number of clubs, including Tottenham, to join the Gunners in a deal worth in the region of £27 million.

The deal saw the youngster return to his former club Saint-Etienne on loan for the 2019/20 campaign.

After an injury-hit start to the season, Saliba has played 17 games in all competitions impressing in the centre-back role for the French club.

Who is Arsenal's first choice left-back?

When he does return to north London, the 19-year-old will take his place in a squad which is already bloated with central defenders.

The Gunners signed Pablo Mari on loan from Flamengo in January, with the Spanish defender impressing in the limited amount of games he has played so far.

Arsenal have an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the campaign, which would add more competition for Saliba next season.

Writing on his live Q&A on Monday, football.london's Arsenal club writer Art de Roche gave his take on the situation, and how the Gunners may decide to reshuffle their squad once the Frenchman arrives.

"Whether or not another centre-back arrives at Arsenal with William Saliba, a shuffle of the pack is needed," he wrote.

"There are currently six centre-backs in the first team (excluding Saliba and Konstantinos Mavropanos) so the pair returning from their loans will crowd the scene even more so.

"Looking at the options in the Arsenal backline, two players stand out as the ones to make way - Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis.

"Both have improved under Mikel Arteta - especially Mustafi - but this doesn’t hide the fact that both their contracts expire in 2021.

"Reaching the final year of their respective deals, the logical call would be to try and shift them before they try and run their contracts down.

"With David Luiz and Pablo Mari the first choice partnership for now, Calum Chambers injured and Rob Holding yet to return in full capacity since his anterior cruciate ligament injury in the 2018/19 season, moving these players on would be more difficult."
