William Hill to close 700 stores putting 4,500 jobs at risk

William Hill has announced that it will close 700 stores across the UK.

In a statement released today, the firm said 4,500 employees could be at risk of losing their job.

The high street bookmaker has Nottingham city centre stores in Beastmarket Hill and Manvers Street as well as other branches across the county.

It is not yet known which stores will be affected but the closures are expected to begin before the end of the year, MirrorOnline reports.

The betting shop said: "William Hill has entered into a consultation process with retail colleagues over plans to close around 700 licensed betting offices.

"Since then the company has seen a significant fall in gaming machine revenues, in line with the guidance given when the Government’s decision was announced in May 2018.

"A large number of redundancies is anticipated with 4,500 colleagues at risk.

"The Group will look to apply voluntary redundancy and redeployment measures extensively and will be providing support to all colleagues throughout the process."

William Hill has previously said up to 900 betting shops could be at risk of closure thanks to changes to the rules around fixed odds betting terminals the Government has pushed through.

Changes designed to help those affected by problem gambling cut in the maximum stake on FOBTs to £2 on April 1.
