William Hill to close 700 stores across the UK with Glasgow jobs at risk

Bookmaker William Hill has confirmed that it will close 700 betting shops across the UK.

Today the company confirmed the move, which will put around 4,500 jobs at risk across the whole of the country.

Glasgow itself has 446 licensed gambling premises in the city, with more than 110 William Hill betting shops.

In a statement, the firm said: "William Hill has entered into a consultation process with retail colleagues over plans to close around 700 licensed betting offices."

"Since then the company has seen a significant fall in gaming machine revenues, in line with the guidance given when the Government’s decision was announced in May 2018."

Previously William Hill had said it was considering closing around 900 stores across the country as a result of changes to the rules around fixed odds betting terminals, which were implemented by the government on April 1.

The statement continues: "A large number of redundancies is anticipated with 4,500 colleagues at risk.

"The Group will look to apply voluntary redundancy and redeployment measures extensively and will be providing support to all colleagues throughout the process."

Shop closures are expected to begin before the end of the calendar year, with the result dependant on the end of the consultation process.
