William Hill to close 700 betting shops with loss of thousands of jobs

Betting group William Hill has said it plans to close around 700 betting shops across the UK, with 4,500 jobs at risk.

The betting chain, which has two offices in Leeds as well as 23 betting shops, plans to begin closing stories by the end of 2019.

William Hill said of its store closure plans: "This follows the Government's decision to reduce the maximum stake on B2 gaming products to £2 on 1 April 2019.

"Since then the company has seen a significant fall in gaming machine revenues, in line with the guidance given when the Government's decision was announced in May 2018."

The Leeds offices are based at the St John's Centre and on City Walk, with seven betting shops in the city centre and 16 elsewhere in Leeds.

William Hill said it had entered into a consultation process with staff and will 'look to apply voluntary redundancy and redeployment measures extensively'.
