William Hill to close 700 betting shops and axe 4,500 jobs

William Hill could close hundreds of its licensed betting shops, putting 4,500 jobs at risk.

The betting giant entered into a consultation process with colleagues on July 4, according to Business Live.

The company has 2,300 shops and employs 12,500 people in the UK.

William Hill has blamed the government’s decision to reduce the maximum stake on fixed-odds betting terminals to £2 (previously people could bet up to £100 every 20 seconds) in April this year.

A spokesman said since the reduction the company has seen a "significant fall" in gaming machine revenues, in line with the guidance given when the government’s decision was announced in May 2018.

They told Business Live: "A large number of redundancies is anticipated with 4,500 colleagues at risk.

"The Group will look to apply voluntary redundancy and redeployment measures extensively and will be providing support to all colleagues throughout the process.

"Subject to the outcome of the consultation process, shop closures are likely to begin before the end of the year."
