William Hill closes latest outlet in Wales - blaming decision to slash stakes on betting terminals

William Hill has closed its latest store in Wales - blaming the UK Government's decision to slash stakes on fixed-odds betting terminals.

In March the UK Government announced that the maximum stake that can be played on fixed-odds betting terminals (FOBT) is being cut from £100 to £2.

These machines have been described as the crack cocaine of gambling.

This July William Hill announced plans to close 700 shops, putting 4,500 jobs at risk, in response to the betting terminal decision.

Now a store on Gloddaeth Street in Llandudno has been shut - although a second William Hill shop in the town remains open.

A William Hill spokesman said: "In July, William Hill announced that we had entered into a consultation process with retail colleagues over plans to close around 700 licensed betting offices.

"This follows the Government’s decision to reduce the maximum stake on B2 gaming products to £2 on 1 April 2019.

"Unfortunately our shop in Llandudno is now uneconomic and has closed as a result of this.

"We are utilising redeployment and voluntary redundancy where possible and will provide full support to anyone impacted by redundancy."

This news follows the closure of a Betfred store in Amlwch in August.
