William and Kate actors share kiss during St Andrews filming for The Crown

The actors playing Prince William and Kate Middleton in the final season of The Crown have been seen sharing a kiss in the rain in St Andrews.

Ed McVey, 22, and newcomer Meg Bellamy, 19, play Wills and Kate in the sixth series of the Netflix historical drama, which will largely focus on the early days of their blossoming romance. The pair can be seen carrying retro Tesco bags loaded with shopping as they are caught in a downpour, The Mirror reports.

No detail has been missed for the scenes, set in the early 2000s when the pair met as they studied at St Andrews University. The cars parked in the street even feature paper tax discs in their windscreens – something cars haven't had in the UK since 2014.

In new set pictures from the upcoming show, William can be seen gazing at Kate – capturing the period in which they met in 2001. Their relationship continued to grow following their time in St Andrews and the couple announced their engagement in 2010.

In interviews given since that time, Kate has recalled how she got to know him over time – revealing that they became "very close friends" from an early stage. She said: "William wasn't there for quite a bit of the time initially, he wasn't there from Freshers' Week, so it did take a bit of time for us to get to know each other, but we did become very close friends from quite early on."

It has been claimed that Kate's stint on a catwalk for a student fashion show, in which she wore a sheer dress, caught William's attention and saw their friendship turn into something more romantic. He was given the title of Prince of Wales last year following the death of his grandmother, The Queen, and the appointment of his father Charles as King.

It is not known how much of the couple's relationship will feature in the sixth series of the Crown, which will also focus on the death of Princess Diana and the changing dynamics of the royal family in the modern era after her passing. Insiders have suggested that there will be scenes showing Dominic West's version of Prince Charles - now King Charles III - in distress after seeing the body of his former wife.

Sources have claimed that the actor playing the late Princess Diana was made to lay in a coffin and "play dead". Charles is then said to "enter the room and is in floods of tears" as the scene focuses on his grief.

The episodes covering the aftermath of Diana's 1997 car crash in Paris will also show a fictional version of the heartbreaking moment young Prince William and Prince Harry walked behind their mother's coffin. Imelda Staunton will return as Queen Elizabeth II after taking over from Olivia Coleman, who held the reins for two seasons after Claire Foy.

Season six of the Crown is expected to be released later this year.
