Willem II fans set for Rangers party as 1000 punters to gather despite coronavirus fears

One thousand Willem II fans are set to descend on a city square for their Europa League clash with Rangers.

Officials in Tilburg, where the club is based, have granted permission for a large, socially distanced gathering despite rising coronavirus cases in the Netherlands.

The Eredivisie side square off with Steven Gerrard 's men later on Thursday in a third round qualifier - the club's first European home game in 15 years.

According to ad.nl, city officials believe an organised event with enforced social distancing and contact tracing is preferable to a number of unregulated gatherings across numerous locations.

Spokeperson Irma Galama said: "We are of course not crazy.

"It's only natural that this festival should be celebrated after so many years.

"But it will be done together through an organisation that can be held accountable for the responsibility."

The event is set to be hosted in Tilburg's Olympiaplein ahead of the 8pm kick-off at the Koning Willem II Stadium.

Rangers can set up a play off tie against either Galatasaray or Hadjuk Split with victory over Adrie Koster's side.
