Will Young says he ditched 'joyless' BRIT awards to 'declutter' home

Will Young has said that he decided to ditch his BRIT awards in order to declutter his home as they "didn't spark joy".

In comparison, the Pop Idol winner said that he would never get rid of his Top of the Pops ones.

Back in 2018, the 42-year-old singer auctioned off his awards for £5,000 to raise money for a dogs' home in Thailand.

Will won the awards in 2003 for Best Breakthrough Act and Best Song in 2005, but he said that they remind him of an "unhappy time in his life".

Appearing on The One Show with Stacey Solomon, who is presenting a new show about helping families declutter their homes, Will was asked whether he was a hoarder.

He said: "I did get rid of a lot of awards a few years ago. I actually got rid of my BRITs-"

Stacey interjected: "I would have had them!"

"I auctioned them," Will said as he pointed out the room behind her. "Maybe you bought them - is that them on the mantlepiece?!

"It was things that sparked joy and they didn't spark joy. But my Top of the Pops awards - they weren't going anywhere!"

Stacey went on to speak about her "obsession" with tidying on social media and offered her own organisational tips.

"There's a couple of things that get reactions because they seem really silly," she said. "So I remember once using one of my oven racks to store my make-up in.

"I thought it was really handy but people were like, 'What the hell?!'"

When speaking about when he was first getting rid of the awards, Will said: "People think I am mad to get rid of my Brits but to me they are just a reminder of a not very happy time in my life. I would rather the money go to the dogs.

"Then I am turning bad into good. That’s just the way I want to be."
