Will this 'mini heatwave' last? This is what the Met Office is saying

The North East is basking in sunshine as a "mini heatwave" sweeps the region - but how long will it last?

Temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday were set to reach 19C, and possibly hit the early 20s, with plenty of sun around.

Tuesday night was also expected to be warm, with the mercury hovering at 11C.

But Met Office forecasters say we will start to see a change in the weather pattern from Thursday onwards.

It will get a little cooler and we might see some showers.

Spokesman Grahame Madge said: "At the moment, high pressure is firmly in charge and that creates very settled conditions. We have got exceptionally fine weather being brought by that high pressure.

"But this is going to be reasonably short-lived and there will be a change of pattern.

"On Tuesday, there is plenty of sunshine and light winds. It will still be a bit cool by night and you might see dew in the morning, possibly frost in more isolated rural spots.

"Temperatures will reach 19C in the Newcastle area - it might go into the 20s. And Wednesday will be similar.

"After that we are going to get a flow of air coming from central Europe and it is going to bring slightly cooler temperatures and possibly some showers.

"I don't want to suggest that it's going to be cold. The weather is not going to breakdown completely - it will just be cooler compared to Tuesday and Wednesday."

On Thursday, clouds will begin to build and the temperature will drop to around 15C. And by Friday afternoon, it will fall to around 12C and we might see the odd shower coming in, said Mr Madge.
