Will there be more snow? Here's the weather forecast for the North East

Many in the North East woke up to snow or sleet as temperatures plummeted in the region on Wednesday.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for snow until 10am, covering Northumberland and County Durham .

And people were urged to be careful on the roads as hazardous driving conditions became apparent across the counties.

The forecasters said: "A spell of sleet and snow is expected on Wednesday morning, mostly on high ground. 2-5 cm snow may accumulate above 200 metres, whilst 5-10 cm is possible above 400 metres in a few places.

"This may lead to tricky driving conditions and some disruption on higher routes.

"Any snow at lower levels looks less likely to settle on roads. Sleet and snow will mostly die out by late morning with a thaw then likely."

They said it would remain cold throughout the day, with temperatures hovering between 2C and 6C.

It would eventually become brighter, but with sharp wintry showers during the afternoon.

Further showers were expected during the evening, giving way to a more prolonged spell of rain, sleet and some hill snow later in the night.

However, the weather is set to improve a little on Thursday.

The Met Office says: "Early rain and hill snow will clear to leave a rather cold but drier and brighter day than on Wednesday, with fewer, lighter showers and more in the way of sunshine. The maximum temperature will be 10C."

Between Friday and Sunday, it will stay cold, with Friday likely to be driest and brightest.
