Will there be another series of BBC's Ambulance?

Millions of us have been tuning in to Ambulance every week to see what the North West Ambulance Service have been working on.

The BAFTA award-winning BBC One documentary series follows staff from the medical service as they serve the Greater Manchester region 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

As the current compelling run draws to a close, the broadcaster has revealed that another series has been commisioned.

The fifth edition of the popular medical show will return to give the British a public a rare insight into the 'unflinching but humane' frontline of emergency health care in the UK.

As well as continuing its coverage of the North West, the next series, which is yet to be given an air date, will branch out to Mersyside and feature the work of paramedics in Liverpool as winter pushes the service to the limit.

Richard Bond, Creative Director of Dragonfly, says: "With the NHS facing unprecedented demands, this new series could not be more timely, and we're privileged that NWAS have allowed our cameras back in to capture their extraordinary work on the frontline of the winter crisis."

The current series has been one of the most dramatic yet featuring the harrowing moment a pensioner called 999 to tell a handler he had killed his wife.

Praise also poured in for 'warrior' paramedic Ellie after she opened up about her own mental health during an episode which involved her visiting and listening to a patient who felt suicidal after his wife passed away.

Beejal-Maya Patel, BBC Documentaries Commissioning Executive, says: "I'm really excited that Ambulance will be returning to BBC One for a fifth series, this time filmed in the North West during a crucial time for the emergency services.

"The programme's dramatic 360 storytelling will reveal the pressures they are under as well as explore the bigger picture of the challenges facing society."
