Will there be a white Christmas in Ireland? Bookie's slash odds of snow in Dublin despite Met Eireann doubts

We're just over three weeks from Santa arriving and if the bookies are to be believed we could be in for a white Christmas in Dublin.

Snow hasn't fallen on Christmas Day in the capital since 2010 but Ladbrokes have slashed their odds of a repeat this year.

The imminent arrival of Storm Barra has seen a flurry of bets this morning, with the odds of it snowing anywhere in Ireland on Christmas Day cut from 1/2 to 1/3.

Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes said: “Punters have woken up dreaming of a white Christmas.

"The stormy weather has prompted the gamble, with the odds now at a record low."

The odds of snow falling in Dublin and Belfast currently stand at 4/1 while Cork can be backed at 6/1.

But punters should take heed of Met Eireann's monthly forecast for December which predicts a dry Christmas with little chance of snow.

The forecast for the week beginning December 20 reads: "A change in weather pattern is currently signalled with high pressure building to the northeast of Ireland.

"There is a strong indication that it will be drier and calmer than average with mostly settled conditions in across the country.

"Frost and ice may occur though with possible mist and fog too. Air temperatures are likely to be around normal average for late December."
