Will there be a season two of Netflix’s The Diplomat?

Netflix’s new political drama The Diplomat has proved yet another hit for the streaming giant. From showrunner Debora Cahn – writer and producer of The West Wing and Homeland – the series stars Cocaine Bear’s Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, the new US Ambassador to the UK.

The Diplomat follows Kate as she is thrust into her new role and must diffuse international crises and forge strategic alliances in London, all while trying to survive her marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal (Rufus Sewell). The series has been well received by both critics and general audiences and currently boasts an 88 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

It’s also Netflix’s most-watched TV show, knocking action-thriller The Night Agent off the top spot. Many fans have already binged the entire series since it dropped on Thursady (April 20) and are calling for a second season following its explosive cliffhanger ending.

Will there be a season two of Netflix’s The Diplomat?

Netflix is yet to officially renew The Diplomat, but given its success and its open-ended finale, a second season seems likely. Cahn has also expressed her interest in continuing the story.

Speaking to Elle, she said: “I have been fortunate in my life to work on a lot of long-running series, so I think that’s how I think. I look for stories that can go on for a long time because, for me, the excitement of being able to go in really deep with characters you already know and you have a relationship with is fantastic.”

Cahn has also signed a multi-year overall deal with Netflix for the series and other projects, which suggests the story of The Diplomat is far from over. Russell has similarly shown interest in returning to the role, telling Elle: “[Actors] all have different jobs and some are good and some are okay or some are really serious, and this is a really fun one to be a part of.

“I would love to do more. So we’ll see.”
