Will there be a new Bank Holiday following the Queen's death?

The country will enter a period of national mourning following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

This mourning period will last for 10 days, up to and including the day of the late Queen's funeral. King Charles is expected to embark on a tour of the UK before the burial is held.

Many people are wondering whether a new Bank Holiday will be created during this time. However, though Queen Elizabeth's death is a devastating and momentous occasion, marked by an outpouring of national grief, it will not mean the closure of businesses across the country.

This is much in line with her birthday, which is also not an official bank holiday. The day of the funeral will be a Day of National Mourning, but employers will not be compelled to give staff a day off.

There is expected to be a two-minute silence on the day of the funeral. And there will also be many opportunities for members of the public to pay their respects.

The funeral will be held at Westminster Abbey and The Queen will be buried at King George VI Memorial Chapel.

The queen's funeral is expected to be attended by dignitaries and heads of states from around the world. Westminster Abbey normally holds 2,200 congregants, but extra seating can be arranged to accommodate over 8,000 people as it did at the queen's coronation.
