Will there be a fourth heatwave this summer? Everything we know

  • The UK's third heatwave of the summer is ending for many parts of England and Scotland, following a scorching period where temperatures exceeded 30C for at least 12 days in July.
  • While ITV’s weather service predicts another heatwave could begin in early August, and the BBC suggests above-average temperatures will continue, the Met Office currently sees no signs of a widespread heatwave, but said there is time for another one to develop.
  • Heatwave conditions are met when a location records at least three consecutive days with maximum temperatures reaching or exceeding a local threshold, which varies between 25C and 28C across the UK.
  • There have already been 28 days in 2026, consecutive and non-consecutive, when 30C has been exceeded somewhere in the UK.
  • Despite regional variations, the UK has seen below-average rainfall this summer, leading to concerns for farmers.
