Will there be a Bank Holiday to mark Prince Philip's funeral? The protocol explained

The Duke of Edinburgh died on Friday at the age of 99.

Buckingham Palace said Prince Philip died peacefully in his sleep at Windsor Castle, leaving the Queen and the royal family “mourning his loss”.

His death has triggered a flood of tributes from across the globe – with world leaders, foreign royal families, and charities hailing his life and legacy.

But many members of the public have been left questioning whether the country will mark his death with a Bank Holiday.

Here, we take a look at the protocol for deaths within the Royal Family.

Will there be a Bank Holiday?

The nation is in an official state of mourning following the loss of Prince Philip, who was married to the Queen for 73 years.

The Queen herself has entered an eight-day period of mourning, where she won't be carrying out any official duties during this time.

The exact details of his funeral arrangements have been announced this weekend, including the date it will be held.

However according to protocol, there won't be a Bank Holiday to mark the occasion.

Only the reigning monarch's state funeral is declared as one. Therefore when Queen Elizabeth II dies, a Bank Holiday will take place to mark her funeral.

The M.E.N has contacted the Department of Business for a statement.

Prince Philip’s ceremonial royal funeral will take place on Saturday, April 17, it has been announced.

It will be held at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, and a national minute’s silence will be observed as it begins at 3pm.

The duke’s coffin will be transported from the castle to the chapel in a specially modified Land Rover he helped design.

It will be followed by the Prince of Wales and senior royals on foot, a senior Palace official said.

With the ongoing Covid-19 lockdown in England, services can only be attended by a maximum of 30 people.

The Duke’s children, grandchildren and other close family will attend as guests, but the pregnant Duchess of Sussex has been advised by her physician not to travel to the UK for the funeral, a Palace spokesman said.

It is understood Meghan made every effort to be able to travel with Harry, who will be among the mourners.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he won't attend in order to make way for more family members.

Originally 800 people would have been due to gather to pay their respects to the nation’s longest-serving consort, but Philip is known to have wanted a low-key affair.

Instead, the proceedings will take place entirely in the grounds of Windsor Castle, televised, but away from public view and with no access for royal fans.

He will lie to rest at Windsor Castle until his funeral, and be buried at Frogmore Gardens, in the grounds of the castle.

The Queen – who was married to her husband for 73 years – has entered an eight-day period of mourning ahead of his funeral.
