He served the nation at the monarch's side before officially retiring from public engagements in the summer of 2017.

Unlike in the event of the Queen's death as the reigning monarch, Brits will not get a bank holiday on the day of Prince Philip's funeral but the country has entered a period of mourning, reports The Mirror.

The national period of mourning will last until the day of the funeral, when people will still be expected to go to work.

In this period, flags on public buildings will be flown at half mast, MPs will wear black armbands on their left arm in parliament and local governments will give ‘careful thought’ to doing any official business.

The Prime Minister has said: "We remember the Duke above all for his steadfast support for Her Majesty the Queen, not just as her consort, by her side, every day of her reign, but as her husband, has strength and stay of more than 70 years.

"And it is to Her Majesty, and her family, that our nation's thoughts must turn today."

Labour leader Keir Starmer added: "The United Kingdom has lost an extraordinary public servant in Prince Philip.

"Prince Philip dedicated his life to our country - from a distinguished career in the Royal Navy during the Second World War to his decades of service as the Duke of Edinburgh.

"However, he will be remembered most of all for his extraordinary commitment and devotion to The Queen."

The Palace said in a statement: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

"Further announcements will made in due course.

"The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."
