Leo Varadkar finally proclaimed he is the Tánaiste, not the Taoiseach, this week.
It has been five months since Fianna Fáil leader, Micheál Martin, took over the reins as Taoiseach from Leo Varadkar.
Mr Varadkar had served as Taoiseach for three years from June 2017 to June this year.
But people haven’t been able to get it out of their head that Leo is gone and Micheál is in.
And this week it went to another level when three out of four Dáil leaders grilling him during Leaders Questions on Thursday called him by his old title.
Taoiseach, Taoiseach, Taoiseach we heard, first from Sinn Féin’s Pearse Doherty, then from Labour leader Alan Kelly and then again from Solidarity/People Before Profit’s Bríd Smith.
And it wasn’t another half hour before Clare independent TD, Michael McNamara called him Taoiseach instead of Tánaiste once again.
Finally, Mr Varadkar moved to try and nail it once and for all when he told the Dáil shortly before lunchtime: “I’m very definitely the Tánaiste and I’m happy to confirm that for anyone that hasn’t worked that out by now.”
But it has been happening for months, with reporters, TV presenters and even the new Taoiseach himself, Mr Martin for clarity, calling the old ‘teesh’ Taoiseach on occasion.
And you can be sure it will happen again and it will still need to be asked sometimes when the two are in the same room: ‘Would the real Taoiseach please stand up?’
