Will the new minimum unit pricing for alcohol affect pubs and what will new prices look like?

A new minimum until pricing for alcohol will be introduced on Tuesday, which will see a new ‘floor price’ for alcohol.

This will mean alcohol will not be permitted to be legally sold beneath a set price.

The minimum price will be calculated based on the amount of alcohol in the drink measured in grams, meaning the stronger the drink, the more it will cost.

The rule will mean alcohol will cost 10c per gram with a standard drink containing about 10g of alcohol from Tuesday.

Will the new pricing affect pubs?

The Government voted to introduce the minimum pricing rule of 10c per gram of alcohol, with a standard drink containing about 10g of alcohol in Ireland.

However, the introduction of minimum unit pricing will not affect alcohol prices in pubs, clubs and restaurants as they already sell alcohol well above the threshold for minimum unit pricing.

The changes will mostly be seen when purchasing alcohol in a supermarket and some off-licences, with cheaper alcohol seeing the most significant price increase.

For people who already pay more than the above prices for alcohol, the change is likely to have minimal impact on your pocket.

What will the new prices look like?

Minimum unit pricing has been brought in to target the sale of cheap alcohol as it is a major contributor to harmful and binge drinking.

Alcohol Action Ireland has said the pricing of alcohol in Ireland means a woman can reach a low-risk weekly drinking limit of 11 standard drinks for just €5.49.

While men can reach their low-risk weekly drinking limit of 17 standard drinks for less than €9.

To combat this, the new pricing of alcohol will look like this:

Four cans of Karpackie was €6 now 7.89

24 cans of Budweiser was €15 now €40.80

Gordan’s Gin 75cl was €18 now €20.70

Aldi Baron Saint Jean Spanish white wine was €3.99 now €6.80

One can of Galahad was €0.75 now €1.57

Four cans of Lagunitas IPA was €10 now €7

Jameson whiskey 70cl was €15 now €22.09

15 cans of Guinness was €15 now €24.85
