Will the Grand National take place after the death of Prince Philip?

The Grand National will take place on Saturday as planned, it has been confirmed.

Discussions with the Government had taken place after the death of the Duke of Edinburgh on Friday morning.

Buckingham Palace released a statement saying Prince Philip had died at the age of 99, prompting an outpouring of sympathy from across the globe.

TV schedules were torn up, radio stations switched to news or instrumental versions of songs, as world leaders paid tribute.

But the Grand National Day will continue as planned at Aintree, with jockeys invited to wear black armbands.

The statement read: “Jockey Club Racecourses has held discussions with the British Horseracing Authority regarding the staging of Randox Grand National Day tomorrow at Aintree Racecourse. Following consultation with government, we can confirm that Randox Grand National Day will go ahead on Saturday.

“Following the sad news of the death of the Duke of Edinburgh a two-minute silence will be held on course ahead of the 173rd Randox Grand National, jockeys will be invited to wear black armbands and flags will be flown at half-mast at the racecourse.

“ITV will broadcast its coverage of Randox Grand National Day on its main channel as scheduled.”

ITV also issued a statement: "The Randox Grand National will remain on the main channel on Saturday, April 10 from 2-6.15pm as scheduled."

Buckingham Palace's plan for when Prince Phillip dies is named Operation Forth Bridge, which will now begin immediately, meaning the country enters a period of national mourning.

Flags above public buildings are to be lowered to half-mast, and all royal public appearances are cancelled until further notice. Television newsreaders will wear black as a mark of respect., and MPs will wear black armbands in parliament. This lasts until the funeral.
