The death of Chad’s President Idriss Deby has thrown the country and its neighbours into disarray.

Although Deby led with an authoritarian grip for 30 years, Western nations saw him as a crucial ally. He was killed near the northern border with Libya while leading troops battling a rebel group.

The military has appointed his son as interim leader.
