Will Sunderland have a Wembley hangover tonight? Accrington boss thinks not

Accrington Stanley manager John Coleman doesn't believe Sunderland will be suffering from a Wembley hangover when the two sides meet tonight.

The Black Cats had a grueling 120 minutes of action on Sunday in the Checkatrade Trophy final, before losing on penalties to Portsmouth.

But Coleman feels Jack Ross will have his side raring to go as the Wearsiders look to close the gap on second-placed Barnsley with a win at the .

“I do not think what happened on Sunday will have any bearing on Wednesday night,” Coleman told accringtonstanley.co.uk .

“They will have three days to recover and get rest into their legs.

“Sunderland will be looking to bounce back from Sunday and they are a good team. They will pose us problems but they will know we will pose them problems from the two games we have played them in already.

“We have some good players and I can’t see any reason why we can’t win. I love being involved in games, I am up for the challenge.”

Accrington have lost five of their last six League One games and sit just two points above the relegation zone albeit, like Sunderland , with games in hand.

A 5-2 defeat for Accrington at Burton was followed by a narrow 1-0 loss at home to Fleetwood on Saturday, and Coleman believes it will be fine margins again which decide the game tonight.

“You have to make decisions about the team and we had to shake it up and get a response," he added.

"I think we were a lot better defensively but we probably need to be more creative.

“Looking back at Fleetwood, there was nothing in the game and I was disappointed we didn’t work their keeper more. A draw would have been a fair result and if anything I think we shaded it.

“The way pitches are this season, chances will be at a premium and will be decided on a mistake or a set-piece.

“In this case, it was both and games will be settled by fine margins, we just have to hope they fall our way.”

Sunderland's Wembley woe will not impact their promotion campaign, says Jack Ross
