Will Storm Wanda impact Scotland as Met Office gives latest weather update

Tropical Storm Wanda is reportedly heading across the Atlantic towards the UK.

The storm formed over the ocean near America in recent weeks and it is now said to be pushing east. It could bring showers and gusts to the UK on Tuesday, the Mirror reports.

Forecasters say that the storm could lose force as it continues to make the journey across the Atlantic, which means that it may no longer be classified as a tropical storm when it arrives.

But there is still the chance that the country could be impacted by a washout during this week, while wind could cause havoc for road and rail transport.

Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern said that there is uncertainty about how much impact Storm Wanda will have and it depends on the way it reacts to the jet stream.

“There will be a bright start to the new week, but an area of cloud, wind and rain will move in from the west,” he said.

“There is some uncertainty because it is associated with an area of low pressure that is moving towards Iceland.

"There is the possibility that Wanda will be picked up by the jet stream, and if the energy created by Wanda interacts with the jet stream in a certain way the jet stream will become more amplified.

“There is also a developing area of low pressure near Florida that is moving north. Essentially, what we have got is a tropical storm and another area of low pressure, and the jet stream all interacting in a complex way during the next few days.”

Will Storm Wanda hit Scotland?

The latest forecast suggests that Scotland will be largely spared from the impact of the storm.

Gusts are expected to pick up to a high of around 40mph in the far north of the country on Tuesday evening, with western coastal spots seeing winds of around 30mph.

Eastern and southern Scotland could see wind gusts creep into the 20s during this period.

Most parts of Scotland will remain dry throughout today, with some showers scattered in small pockets of the country.

But there is a chance that this could all change next week, as forecasters anticipate heavy snowfall to hit Scotland from Saturday, November 20.

Snow is set to be at its heaviest in western and northern Scotland, with the chance of wintry showers traveling down to the south west of the country that day.

Temperatures are also set to plummet over that weekend, with a low of -6C expected in the Highlands.
