Will Smith quits Suicide Squad sequel

Will Smith is not expected to return to for Suicide Squad's sequel.

Although the news hasn't been officially confirmed, Variety reports that Smith has parted ways with the DC sequel, with scheduling being the ultimate factor. The split is said to be amicable on both sides.

Smith played Deadshot in the 2016 film, the most wanted and deadly hitman in the world.

Warner Bros has yet to confirm who will be returning for the sequel, titled The Suicide Squad, although sources say the studio was focused on bringing back the first film's biggest stars, Smith and Margot Robbie, while figuring out other casting decisions along the way.

Although the first film was largely eviscerated by critics, it had a strong debut and eventually grossed over $746m worldwide, making it the 10th highest-grossing film of 2016.

Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn was hired as the sequel's writer and director last year, with hopes to start production this fall.

The Suicide Squad is set for release on 6 August 2021.
