Will OL coach Tom Cable be Achilles’ heel for Raiders in 2019?

The Oakland Raiders made a bunch of moves this offseason to improve their roster. But could their biggest weakness not be a position or a player, but rather a coach?

In a recent article, Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report named every team’s biggest concern heading into the 2019 season. For the Raiders, Moton listed offensive line coach Tom Cable, who has been under fire the last few years. Take a look at why Moton is concerned about Cable:

For whatever reason, offensive line coach Tom Cable’s units have failed miserably at protecting the quarterback. According to Football Outsiders (h/t Warren Sharp of Sharp Football), his groups have never ranked higher than 20th in pass protection.

The Raiders added to their offensive line this season, bringing in veteran Trent Brown to hold down the right tackle job. They’ve also added Richie Incognito and Jonathan Cooper to compete for the left guard spot after moving on from Kelechi Osemele. Overall, it’s a significantly more talented offensive line than it was last season.

But now it’s up to Cable to get the most out of the unit. Can he find a way to protect Derek Carr? If not, the Raiders likely won’t have much success next season. This could be a make-or-break year for Cable’s coaching career.
