Will queues outside supermarkets come back from Monday? Government's new 'rule of six' explained

Boris Johnson announced a change to the legal limit on gatherings this week with the number being cut from 30 to six in what he is calling 'the rule of six'.

From Monday, September 14, those caught in bars, restaurants, parks and other locations in bigger groups face being fined up to £3,200.

When it comes to visiting supermarkets and high street stores the same rules apply.

But with the new 'rule of six' coming into force, will you have to queue to enter your local supermarket again?

The answer is no, as the one metre social distancing rule still applies - meaning there won't be new limits on how many people can enter stores, reports MirrorOnline.

A spokesperson from the British Retail Consortium - which represents supermarkets - said: "New Government restrictions on group sizes will not affect the current shopping experience.

"Since the pandemic began, retailers have invested millions in social distancing measures to make stores safe for customers."

There are exceptions to the 'rule of six'. Speaking during his press conference earlier this week, Boris Johnson said: "There will be some limited exemptions. For example, if a single household or support bubble is larger than six, then obviously they can still gather.

" Covid-secure venues like places of worships, gyms, restaurants, hospitality venues can still hold more than six in total. Within those venues, however, there must not be individual groups larger than six and groups must not mix socially or form larger groups."
