Will petrol and diesel prices rise again? Tesco and Sainsburys give latest update

We’re all feeling the pinch at the minute with the cost of living crisis.

But nowhere more so than at the petrol pumps with motorists facing huge price hikes.

According to the RAC, the UK average unleaded petrol price per litre is now around 1.63p, with diesel costing 177.4p on average. Its website predicts that those prices should fall, but that is not guaranteed.

In March the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, announced a 5p cut in fuel duty until March 2023 and most retailers have passed that saving on to customers at the forecourts. We asked three major supermarkets whether fuel prices will rise again - and this is what they said.

A spokesperson for Tesco said: "Tesco reduced its price of fuel at our petrol filling stations by 6p on the same day that the Chancellor made the announcement. We regularly monitor fuel prices throughout a local area to ensure we’re providing competitive prices for our customers. Afraid we wouldn’t get into future pricing.”

A representative for Sainsbury's said: "We price locally and always aim to be competitive. I am afraid we are unable to provide local price breakdowns.

"However I can confirm that following the Chancellor’s Spring Statement regarding cutting fuel duty, Sainsbury’s confirmed it will be passing on the price reduction to customers – cutting the price of a litre by 6p which includes a 1p reduction in VAT. The lower price is available across all of Sainsbury’s 315 forecourts, providing better value for millions of motorists across the UK."
