Will Newcastle United be relegated? Magpies fans have a dramatic change in confidence

Newcastle United fans are now a lot more confident the Magpies will be a Premier League club again next season.

Steve Bruce's side put in a spirited display at home to Tottenham at the start of the month and then backed up that 2-2 draw with a vital 2-1 win away at Burnley.

It means the Magpies are now six points clear of 18th placed Fulham and, crucially, they have a game in hand over their rivals as well.

It has lifted spirits on Tyneside and that has been reflected in the confidence of supporters.

Newcastle's drab display in their 3-0 defeat to Brighton last month stretched their dire run of form to just two wins in 20 games, which had made them the bookies' favourites to be relegated.

Indeed, the pressure growing over Steve Bruce's position was such that 95% of 14,000 fans surveyed by Chronicle Live wanted him removed as the club's manager.

Fans had lost faith in Newcastle's survival prospects and although they were two points clear of Fulham at that stage, 91% of fans felt the club were destined for relegation following the drubbing at the Amex.

Since then, Newcastle have picked up four points to Fulham's zero in their last two games and that has dramatically changed the relegation picture.

And while fans aren't entirely confident Newcastle will survive, there has been a significant shift in supporter confidence.

47% of fans now believe Newcastle will avoid relegation, which is a rise of 38% in three weeks, 40% of fans feel it is still too close to call and just 13% of fans believe United will be relegated - down 78% from the previous poll.

Newcastle can strengthen their Premier League status on Saturday when they take on in-form West Ham at St James' Park, before Fulham travel to Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.
