Will my holiday to France go ahead - and what happens if it's cancelled?

The FCO announced this week that it is now advising against all but essential travel to France, over fears of rising numbers of coronavirus cases in the country.

From 4am on Saturday 15th August onwards, any Brits who are in France or returning from the country will be required to self-isolate for 14 days when they arrive back in the UK.

But what does this mean for Brits who have a holiday booked?

As the FCO advises against travel, your holiday is likely to be cancelled.

The first thing you should do is get in touch with your tour operator, travel firm or travel agent.

You are entitled to a refund if your airline or packaged holiday is cancelled.

It's worth noting that in the case of flights, some may still go ahead despite the advice, so if your flight isn't cancelled you may have to negotiate with your airline. (Some have been offering vouchers or the option to re-book for a later date instead).

When it comes to package holidays, travel companies are offering a range of options, which include a refund as well as other options such as re-booking the same trip for a later date, or being offered credit/vouchers to use with them on a future holiday.

Booked flights and a hotel separately? You'll need to negotiate - it may be that you're not offered a full refund, but you may be able to bag vouchers for future trips.

You can find out more in our full guide to refund rights following the change of France travel advice.

Because of the sheer number of travellers affected by cancelled trips during the pandemic, it's worth noting that some firms are prioritising holidaymakers who are due to travel over the next week or two.

If you have a trip planned that's a few weeks/months away, it could be that you will be asked to get in touch again closer to the departure date.

As for travel insurance? If you have an existing policy that you took out before the pandemic broke, then you may be covered for out of pocket losses. Check your policy details and get in touch with your insurance provider.
