Will mums get maternity leave extended due to coronavirus?

The government is considering calls to extend paid maternity leave after a petition amassed almost 200,000 signatures.

A post on the House of Commons Facebook page is seeking opinions from parents, after concerns lockdown has limited bonding opportunities between mums and their newborns.

The government wants to know if lockdown has affected maternity leave, and if mums think their maternity leave should be extended because of coronavirus.

It comes after a petition on the Parliament website saw signatures soar to more than 181,000, smashing the 100,000 signatures required to trigger a Parliamentary debate.

The Commons post said: "The Petitions Committee is investigating a petition calling for maternity leave to be extended in light of COVID-19. It wants to hear your experiences to inform its work."

More than 18,000 comments have already been left since the post went live on Thursday, April 30.

One Bristol mum, Chloe, who left a comment said: "Lockdown has meant that the only faces my baby has seen for the last month and a half are that of me and her dad - she’s only three months old so has spent 50 per cent of her life hearing the same two voices and seeing the same two faces.

"She was born in January but already it feels like the clock is ticking until I have to return to work having missed out on so many social activities due to lockdown.

"An extension of maternity leave would mean I could enjoy spending time with her without having to stress about finances and returning to work."

Many others shared similar concerns about their babies missing out on development in the important first few months of their lives.

The Parliamentary petition states: "In light of the recent outbreak and lockdown, those on maternity leave should be given three extra months paid leave, at least.

"This time is for bonding and social engaging with other parents and babies through baby groups, which are vital for development, and now everything has been cancelled.

"Given that the government have closed down many areas of the community new parents and babies are confined to their homes with no social interaction which will ultimately impact on the development of children."

Baby groups were described as being "vital for baby development, bonding and educating both babies and parents".

The deadline for leaving comments on the post is midday on Monday, May 4.
