Megabonk is yet another indie smash hit this year, bringing with it a lot of ecstatic fun, chaotic gameplay, and meme-infused comedy straight out of the Gen Z cultural factory.
But it's also limited to just one platform: the PC, with many wondering if and when the game will come to consoles. So, here's everything you need to know about Megabonk's potential console port.
Is Megabonk coming to PS5, Xbox Series X, or Nintendo Switch?
Megabonk is first and foremost a PC title. A roguelike at heart, it sticks to its guns and roots and currently offers its impeccable gameplay only to the home computer crowd, chiefly on Valve's Steam. Most roguelikes are shaped by mouse-and-keyboard mechanics, especially those with a more classic feel like Megabonk (its many innovations notwithstanding).
But, even so, Megabonk has the potential to break out of the PC prison and land on other consoles, according to its creator vedinad. Speaking to Game Pressure, the developer said releasing Megabonk on consoles is possible, but that it could prove “a bit time-consuming” since they “don't know anything about [porting games to consoles].”
It's not looking great, but that one “maybe,” the developer could turn this into reality at some point down the line. Megabonk is a growing phenomenon, hosting tens of thousands of players at any given moment, which could prompt the developer to embark on branching out to other platforms.
However, other games, which were just as or even more popular than Megabonk, also on PC, are yet to be seen on consoles. Take Lethal Company, for example, one of the biggest indie hits ever. It's not on console years down the line, and its dev also said porting is a huge project that takes a lot of time and resources, which these types of solo-dev projects simply do not have.
But lightning can strike, and only time will tell if vedinad's stellar title is going to make it to the many consoles on the market today.
