Will London Fashion Week still go ahead following the Queen’s death?

Following the tragic news of the Queen’s death yesterday evening, cultural plans for the coming weeks are being cancelled or postponed to make way for operation London Bridge and to pay respect to Her Majesty.

London Fashion Week is no exception, and already this morning Burberry has released a statement saying: “It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen. As a mark of respect, we have taken the decision to cancel our Spring/Summer 2023 runway show due to take place on September 17 in London. We hope to see you in the near future.”

The news of Burberry’s cancellation comes following a statement from the British Fashion Council yesterday evening: “The British Fashion Council will join the nation in mourning and will follow Royal Protocol. All core business activity can continue, however, all non-core business events on the official schedule should be cancelled, for example, parties, openings etc. The Queen’s funeral is likely to take place on D+10. We recommend that shows taking place on this date will need to be rearranged.”

While we await further information we can gather that, if the funeral will go ahead around the 18th, reschduled shows could include: 16Arlington, Rejina Pyo, Halpern, Simone Rocha, Erdem, Stefan Cooke, and Richard Quinn while, on the 19th, Chopova Lowena, Christopher Kane, Supriya Lele, and Chet Lo.

Several parties have already been cancelled and it’s likely that we will see more reshuffling from this season’s London Fashion Week, as brands follow in Burberry’s footsteps.
