Will Leeds United's projected points total be good enough for promotion this season?

Almost a third of the Championship season has passed and it's anyone's guess as to who will be sitting at the top of the pile in May.

Each weekend seems to bring a predictably unpredictable slate of results and is contributing to crowded promotion picture with even 15th place Derby County just three points off the playoff spots.

Leeds United saw off QPR at the weekend and currently sit two places and two points off the top of the table, with West Bromich Albion leading the way.

But what does history tell us about their total so far and whether or not it indicates a top two finish?

The Whites currently have a return of 28 points from their 15 matches so far this season - a points total matched by 17 other Championship sides at this stage going back over the past 25 seasons (from 1993/94).

The last side to have 28 points after 15 games was Huddersfield in 2016-17, who would go on to win promotion via the playoffs after a fifth-placed finish.

Leeds' West Yorkshire neighbours are one of five teams over the past 25 years to be promoted with this same record after 15 matches, while seven have fallen short in the playoffs.

As you can see, that shows that less than a third of these teams claim promotion, while just over 40 per cent face the playoffs.

We have also crunched the numbers to get an average total points tally and finishing position for teams with this record and that again indicates another playoff campaign for Bielsa's men:

Last 25 seasons: Championship sides with exactly 13 points after 14 games and where they finished

Leicester 1995-1996 - final position 6th (71 pts)

Sheffield United 1996-1997 - final position 5th (73 pts)

Middlesbrough 1997-1998 - final position 2nd (91 pts)

West Brom 1997-1998 - final position 10th (61 pts)

Swindon 1997-1998 - final position 18th (52 pts)

Ipswich 1998-1999 - final position 3rd (86 pts)

Preston 2000-2001 - final position 4th (78 pts)

Burnley 2000-2001 - final position 7th (72 pts)

Sheffield United 2002-2003 - final position 3rd (80 pts)

Norwich 2003-2004 - final position 1st (94 pts)

Luton 2005-2006 - final position 10th (61 pts)

Burnley 2006-2007 - final position 15th (57 pts)

West Brom 2009-2010 - final position 2nd (91 pts)

West Ham 2011-2012 - final position 3rd (86 pts)

Cardiff 2012-2013 - final position 1st (87 pts)

Hull 2012-2013 - final position 2nd (79 pts)

Huddersfield 2016-2017 - final position 5th (81 pts)

A hat-tip to Steven Chicken of Examiner Live for crunching the numbers.
