Will it thunder? Met Office issues 18-hour storm warning for Leeds with possible 'danger to life'

Thunderstorms are expected across Leeds tomorrow (Sunday, June 5) with a warning from the Met Office to expect travel disruption, and potential flooding. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning from midnight on Sunday until 6pm.

The urgent warning covers all of Leeds, most of Yorkshire, Lancashire and the entire midlands and south-east of England. There are concerns over flooding, travel delays, flight cancellations and power cuts due to the storms. The Met Office has also warned of a possible 'danger to life'.

The Met Office say: "Thunderstorms developing over parts of England and Wales from early Sunday may cause travel disruption and, in a few places, flooding."

It is not known how severe these storms may be but the Met Office say to expect:

  • Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life and some communities might become cut off if roads flood
  • Flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Power cuts might occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
The warning is in place until Sunday evening (The Met Office)

Torrential downpours are likely in a few places with parts of the Midlands, East Anglia and southeast England most at risk. Some places could see 15-20 mm in an hour, and perhaps up to 50 mm before storms fade, and hail may affect a few spots, however, the thunderstorms will slowly spread into southern parts of northern England on Sunday morning before easing.
