Will it snow on Christmas Day? UK weather forecast and White Xmas odds

We are one snowfall away from a Dickensian Christmas this year.

A white Christmas is the dream of many who love the festive holiday, but most Brits only get a few flakes at best.

Snow in December tends to appear in higher areas and in the north of England and into Scotland.

UK weather also means that snow is far more likely in January, February and March, where the heaviest snowfalls are usually recorded.

The recent weather has made a white Christmas more likely in the eyes of the bookies, however, after Storm Arwen battered the UK with rough winds and temperatures dropping significantly.

So will it snow on Christmas Day?

Will it snow on Christmas Day?

We might still have a white Christmas, but the Met Office have not confirmed this. Weather forecasts are hard to predict and the big day is still a good deal of time away.

The Met Office can have a good go at predicting the long-term weather, but cannot be certain as there are so many variables.

The Met Office said the weather could be "generally unsettled at first, with wettest and windiest conditions likely moving further north with drier and brighter spells developing in the south and southeast at times.

"Temperatures [are] likely to be milder than earlier in the month, with temperatures near to above normal, although some colder spells remain possible.

"It is likely to become more settled around Christmas and towards New Year with increased chance of overnight frost and fog during clearer spells."

What are the odds of a White Christmas?

Since the recent poor weather in the UK, in which Storm Arwen caused a red weather warning and left thousands without power, the odds of a white Christmas have decreased.

Ladbrokes has an odds list for the possibility of the UK's major cities seeing snow on Christmas Day.

  • Snow to fall anywhere in the UK on Christmas Day - 1/2
  • Edinburgh - 5/2
  • Birmingham - 3/1
  • Newcastle - 3/1
  • Belfast - 4/1
  • Dublin - 4/1
  • Liverpool - 4/1
  • Manchester - 4/1
  • London - 5/1
  • Cardiff - 6/1

When is the last time it snowed on Christmas Day?

The last time we had a good amount of snow on December 25 was in 2010, but the last white Christmas was 2020.

The guidelines for what makes it an official white Christmas are actually quite simple. Rather than the image people often have in their minds of snow covered rooftops and icy streets, only a few flakes have to fall.

Snow does not have to settle on the ground, but flakes must be seen from one of the Met Office's observing stations.

It means that, technically, there have been several white Christmases over the years.
