Will it snow in my county? Met Eireann's forecast for the next 24 hours amid unusual warning

Ireland is set to see an end to the mild conditions that remained present for the majority of December.

Met Eireann has forecast a cold snap to arrive on Monday night, with temperatures to drop below freezing and sleet and snow expected on high ground.

The forecaster has warned that localised flooding is also possible due to heavy rainfall throughout the day.

It said: “Outbreaks of rain will continue to push southwards over the country tonight with clearer, drier and much colder conditions following behind.

Some falls of sleet and hill snow are possible for a short time across the midlands and south.

“It will become windy for a time as the rain, and any sleet or snow clears through with a fresh to strong and gusty northerly wind developing, but this will soon ease.

“Frost and icy patches forming with lows of -1 to +3 degrees.”

Tuesday will clear up with more sunny spells expected and just a few scattered showers. However, icy conditions will remain throughout the morning.

The forecaster said: “Tuesday will be a cold and bright day with frost and icy patches clearing during the morning.

“There will be lots of crisp winter sunshine around, with just a few rain or hail showers affecting some western and northern counties.

“Maximum temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees in moderate northwest breezes.”

Counties that could see snow in the next 24 hours

According to Met Eireann, counties in Leinster and Munster will see the worst of the conditions with a higher chance of snow.

These counties include:

Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford, Wicklow, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford.
