Will it be a White Christmas in the UK in 2021 - bookies have their say

The weather is rapidly getting colder with a warning that temperatures could plunge this week - and snow could be on the way.

And now Halloween is behind us, the bookmakers have been talking to weather experts to find out how likely it is we will have a White Christmas.

Gambling.com spokesperson Darren Hughes said: “Winter has firmly gripped the UK and Ireland in recent weeks, and with temperatures dropping by the day, speculation has arisen as to where we might see snowfall on Christmas Day in this part of the world.

"Unsurprisingly, bookmaker odds suggest that the north is by far the likeliest location for a snowball fight this Christmas, with Aberdeen at 7/4 and Glasgow and Edinburgh at 2/1 heading the White Christmas market as of now.

“Newcastle is also high on the list at 5/2, suggesting a 29% chance of snowfall this Christmas, while many Londoners will breathe a sigh of relief to see the capital at odds of 5/1 for a flurry on the 25th. Both Dublin and Cardiff are currently 6/1 in the betting, which also suggests snow is unlikely there this Christmas.”

The definition that the Met Office uses to define a white Christmas is for one snowflake to be observed falling in the 24 hours of 25 December somewhere in the UK.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Traditionally we used to use a single location in the country to define a white Christmas, which was the Met Office building in London.

"However, with the increase in betting on where will see a white Christmas, the number of locations have increased and can now include sites such as Buckingham Palace, Belfast (Aldergrove Airport), Aberdeen (Pittodrie Stadium, Aberdeen FC), Edinburgh (Castle), Coronation Street in Manchester and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

"We also analyse the data from our observing stations around the UK to provide a complete picture of where snow has fallen or was lying on Christmas Day."
