Will Ireland enter level 4 restrictions or even full lockdown if Covid-19 cases keep rising?

A further 613 new Covid-19 cases were announced in Ireland on Saturday as fears grow the pandemic is becoming out of control.

"Level 4" has been trending on Twitter in the country with speculation that the country may have to move up levels if things continue to worsen.

Dr Ronan Glynn warned on Saturday that the latest numbers represent a "significant escalation" of the virus here in Ireland.

However there were no suggestions that any immediate measures would be brought in with NPHET likely to discuss the concern when they meet on Monday.

Donegal and Dublin are currently at level three of the Living with Covid plan with the rest of the country at level two.

Some experts have even suggested that a move to level four is necessary to stop hospital and ICU numbers soaring.

But if Ireland needs to enter level four - what would that mean? Here's a look at that and the dreaded level five;

The Government state on the official website: "The priority at Level 4 is to keep schools and childcare services open, while keeping people safe.

  • No other households allowed visit your home.
  • Outside gatherings of 15 people.
  • No matches can take place, only non-contact training. Not including elite sports.
  • Religious services move online.
  • No indoor dining at restaurants.
  • Outdoor dining only at wet pubs.
  • People asked to stay in their county.

Living with Covid level five main rules

A move to level five would see a return to the lockdown we had in March and April.

The Government says: "At Level 5, the public health risk means that you will be asked to stay at home, except to exercise within 5 kilometres of your home. There will be no gatherings other than small numbers at funerals and weddings."

  • Stay within 5km of your home.
  • No visitors to your home.
  • Essential travel only.
  • Takeaway or delivery only from restaurants and pubs.
