Covid booster Scotland: Everything we know about a fourth vaccine

For over a year now, many of us have been receiving our Covid vaccines.

Whether it's our first or booster - we all still have the same question - and that's 'will we need a second booster?'.

According to experts, a fourth Covid jab is not yet needed as the current booster provides enough protection against severe disease from the omicron variant amongst older adults.

The BBC reports that UK Health Security Agency data shows that three months after boosting, protection against hospitalisation remains around 90% for people aged 65 and over.

In addition, having just two vaccines protects against severe disease with numbers dropping to around 70% after three months and to 50% after six months.

Countries - including Israel - have already been handing out a fourth dose but the advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), remains the same for those living in the UK - including Scotland - with them urging people to get their first, second and third doses.

Prof Wei Shen Lim, the JCVI's chairman of covid immunisation has said that current data supports the evidence that all three vaccines are continuing to provide "high levels of protection against severe disease."

He added: "For this reason, the committee has concluded there is no immediate need to introduce a second booster dose, though this will continue to be reviewed."

Discussing the issue on BBC Radio 4, Professor Anthony Harnden, deputy chairman of the JCVI, said there would be swift action if data showed a drop off in immunity against severe disease for the elderly however at present "all the signs are good.

He added: "What isn't sustainable in the long term is vaccine programme that delivers a vaccine every three months" and if there was going to be another dose, it could be later in the year but for now, it is "not the right time".

If offered one, would you get a second covid booster vaccine?
