Will I get a refund if I cancel my Spain holiday because of new quarantine rules?

Holidaymakers returning from Spain will now have to quarantine for 14 days, or risk a £1,000 fine.

The government has removed Spain from its "air bridge" list amid fears the country is on the brink of a deadly second wave of coronavirus.

The mandatory two week self-isolation is effective immediately, meaning Brits currently on holiday in Spain will be forced into a quarantine they neither expected nor planned for.

This has caused anger and chaos for many - including key workers who are expected back at work.

Many will now have to cancel their Spain holidays this summer, as they cannot logistically quarantine for two weeks.

Can I get a refund if I cancel?

The FCO currently advises against all but essential travel to mainland Spain, which means you should not go on holiday there.

Package holidays will be cancelled by your operator, and you will be entitled to a refund. You should wait for them to cancel the holiday, as you may not get your money back if you cancel it yourself.

If you have booked flights and accommodation separately, it may be more difficult to get a refund.

You should check with your airline to find out if your flight is still operating, and what options are being offered to customers who no longer wish to travel.

EasyJet is giving passengers the opportunity to change their flight without paying a fee, or accept a voucher to the value of their booking.

Tui has cancelled all outgoing Spanish flights, and will contact customers to offer a refund or rebooking.

Unfortunately, if your airline is still operating flights as normal, you may not get your money back.

As hotels in Spain are still open, it may also be difficult to get a refund on your accomodation.

The Foreign Office does not advise against holidays in the Canary or Balearic Islands, so package holidays in these locations may not be cancelled.

However, the quarantine rules do still apply, so if you decide to go ahead with your holiday, you will have to quarantine when you get back.

If you can't self-isolate then you must not go to any part of Spain.

Unfortunately, you may not be entitled to a refund if you decide not to travel because of the quarantine when you get back.
