Will.i.am likens voting for Donald Trump to being in an abusive relationship

Will.i.am compared voting for Donald Trump to being in an abusive relationship during his appearance on Good Morning Britain today.

The singer and songwriter, 45, risked an almighty backlash from Trump supporters over his comments to hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid.

Questioned on how he would feel if Trump triumphed over Democrat candidate Joe Biden, he replied simply: "That would be a terrible thing."

Susanna went on to question: "Despite the fact a few people feel uncomfortable with what he said and done, he still remains remarkably popular and in with a chance."

But Will replied: "Yeah but that’s with any abusive relationship. There’s people that stick with their spouses and go through abuse because they don’t know how to leave, that doesn’t mean that they’re happy.

"They just don’t have the strength or the courage to get out and change and switch it up and have faith in something else. That’s all they know so for the past four years, people have settled and just took the embarrassment and ridiculous antics of how he behaves, divides and steers hate.

Will later defended his comments on Twitter (ITV)

"So another four years of that would be detrimental for the course of America."

He later went on to defend his comments on Twitter after one viewer tweeted: "Is @iamwill really on @GMB saying voting for Trump is the same as being in an abusive relationship? Did I really just hear that?"

To which Will retweeted and replied: "Yes you did."

He went on to tweet: "Stirring racial tension... Female bashing... Sexual offences... Hate speeches... Promoting violence... Covid Neglect... Spreading of Covid at rallies... Amplifying hate on twitter... Lies... Lies... And more LIES... Sounds like an abusive relationship to me..."
