Will Greenwood blown away by the 'granite giant Wales are lucky to have' as he makes English team of the season

Wales lock Will Rowlands is the one Welsh player to make Will Greenwood's English Premiership team of the season.

The Wasps star has been a mainstay for his club throughout the campaign but will leave to join the Dragons at the end of the season.

Picking him in his side for the Telegraph, Greenwood said: "Rowlands is absolute granite. Second most number of minutes in the second row. Hits rucks, tackles like an ox, handles well, great lineout man, stepped up with injury to Joe Launchbury. Rowlands is a class act and Wales are lucky to have him."

Rowlands is yet to produce his best form for the national team in his seven appearances but is likely to get a big opportunity during this summer's Tests against Canada and Argentina in the absence of Lions skipper Alun Wyn Jones.

Former Bridgend winger Tom O'Flaherty also makes the team as he continues his remarkable rise since leaving Welsh rugby in 2017.

O’Flaherty grew up in London and played his rugby for Dulwich College and then Blackheath before moving to Wales to study in Cardiff.

After making his mark in college level, he got his chance with Cardiff RFC towards the end of 2013 and turned out for them four times, scoring four tries.

Then came the move to Bridgend, where he was to become a firm favourite, touching down 18 times during 25 appearances in the 2014-15 season.

He spent a season in France, combining a university placement with a stint in the rugby academy of French Top 14 side Montpellier, but returned to Wales for the final year of his studies, taking up joint registration with Bridgend and the Ospreys.

Greenwood said: "I must pick the hot-stepping, counter-attacking, fearless O’Flaherty. Time and again pulls rabbits out of hats. Does the hard stuff up the middle. Brave, selfless, and rapid."

Dan Biggar and Callum Sheedy both missed out to English sensation Marcus Smith, despite both enjoying fine seasons at Northampton and Bristol respectively.

Gloucester's Lewis Ludlow won the number seven shirt but there were mentions for two Welshman, with Greenwood adding: "Dan Thomas at Bristol is always absolute quality and I enjoyed watching Tommy Reffell late on for Leicester. "

Greenwood's team of the season: 15. Charles Piutau (Bristol Bears) 14. Ben Loader (London Irish) 13. Piers O’Conor (Bristol Bears) 12. Ollie Devoto (Exeter Chiefs) 11. Tom O’Flaherty (Exeter Chiefs) 10. Marcus Smith (Harlequins) 9. Danny Care (Harlequins) 1. Joe Marler (Harlequins) 2. Akker van der Merwe (Sale Sharks) 3. John Afoa (Bristol Bears) 4.
