Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig have scrapped plans to shoot their very own Lifetime movie, sparking suspicions the story may have been an April Fools’ prank.

On 1 April, news broke that the Anchorman 2 costars were proposing their own secretly filmed take on the US channel’s penchant for inexpensively shot melodrama. The “high-stakes dramatic thriller” A Deadly Adoption would have cast Ferrell and Wiig as a well-off couple who are plunged into danger after taking in a young pregnant woman with the intention of adopting her child. The film was also set to star Jessica Lowndes.

But the internet, it seems, ruined everything. “We are deeply disappointed that our planned top-secret project was made public,” said Ferrell in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. “Kristen and I have decided it is in the best interest for everyone to forego the project entirely, and we thank Lifetime and all the people who were ready to help us make this film.”

A Deadly Adoption had been due to screen this summer. The film was reportedly commissioned by Lifetime to celebrate 25 years of its soapy features.

Entertainment Weekly suggests Lifetime might still choose to screen the movie, which is reportedly already in the can. Or the whole thing might be an elaborate stunt, so there may not be a film available to screen in the first place.
