Will Dissly has successful surgery, could return sooner than expected

The Seattle Seahawks got some good news on Friday when coach Pete Carroll reported that tight end Will Dissly’s surgery on his Achilles went really well, and his return date could actually be sooner than anticipated.

“As a matter of fact, his surgery on Thursday was really successful,” Carroll said on KIRO radio’s Pete Carroll show. “He had a minimally invasive procedure that worked about perfectly and he’ll come back a good couple months before he would have got back otherwise.”

With a typical Achilles injury taking almost a year to recover from, Dissly could be on track to return in time for training camp next year, which would give him enough time to get back into game shape well ahead of the 2020 season.

Dissly already healed quickly from the patellar tendon injury he suffered during Week 4 of the 2018 season, so perhaps it’s no surprise that he already has a chance to beat the odds again this year.

“His attitude in the locker room after the game… he can hardly get around and he’s telling me how quick he’s gonna get back and how he knows how to go through this and he’s been there before – you know, he’s pumping me up,” Carroll continued. “I’m getting fired up for him because he’s turned it around already. That’s why a guy like that is so special and so unique. He’s got unbelievable makeup.”

Dissly was officially placed on the Seahawks injured reserve Saturday morning to make room for defensive tackle Jarran Reed, who was formally activated back to the 53-man roster.

The Seahawks will be without Dissly when they host the 4-2 Ravens on Sunday at CenturyLink Field, so expect a heavy dose of Luke Willson and Jacob Hollister to take his place.
