Will Brazil’s Lula da Silva make a political comeback?

Will Brazil’s Lula da Silva make a political comeback?

He was a popular left-wing leader and president of Brazil – but with a criminal record.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was convicted in a corruption and bribery scandal in 2017. But a judge found the court that sentenced him lacked the necessary jurisdiction.

The conviction was annulled and the left-wing politician can now bid for the presidency again next year. If he decides to run, his main rival would be far-right President Jair Bolsonaro.

So, what could this mean for Brazil’s polarised politics?

Presenter: Mohammed Jamjoom

Guests:

Geraldo Zahran – Specialist on Brazil’s ties with the US

James Green – Director of Brazil Initiative at Brown University

Francisco Dominguez – Head of Latin American studies at Middlesex University
