Will Boris Johnson remain Prime Minister if he loses his seat in General Election?

Most MPs will be anxiously awaiting the results of today's General Election , hoping they've done enough to hold onto their .

Among them, surprisingly, is Boris Johnson who is at serious risk of losing the Uxbridge seat he holds with a majority of just 5,304.

According to the Mirror, Labour activists have been putting in a serious effort to overhaul the tally which is the slimmest majority of any sitting Prime Minister since 1924.

The Tory leader doesn't seem too worried about having not voted for himself and instead casting his ballot in central London.

But what happens if Johnson actually loses his seat in tonight's General Election?

Will Boris Johnson still be Prime Minister?

It is possible for Boris Johnson to remain prime minister even if he loses his seat.

In 1963 Sir Alec Douglas-Home became Prime Minister even though he was not a Tory MP.

Just a few days after being made PM, Home renounced his earldom and his place in the House of Lords and then stood in the seat of Kinross and West Perthshire.

It is likely that a loyal Tory MP in a safe seat would stand down to make way for Johnson. He would then stand in a by-election, which he would likely win.

While there's actually nothing in the constitution that says a member of the government has to be an MP, it's arguably not that politically acceptable these days.

Johnson's Uxbridge and South Ruislip seat is expected to be declared at around 4:30am.

Exit polls - which will indicate the results of the election - will be released at 10pm.

Who would be MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip?

The Labour candidate standing against Boris Johnson is Ali Milani. If he manages to win the seat, he will be the first person to ever unseat a UK prime minister.
