Will Avon and Somerset police use drones to track people during lockdown?

Avon and Somerset Police have confirmed they will not be using drones to disperse groups of people.

It comes after an authority in Wales Neath Port Talbot council announced they will be using drones to ensure people stick to social distancing practices outlined by the government.

People have been told to stay at home unless they need to leave the house for one of four reasons - shopping for basic necessities such as food and medicine, one form of exercise a day, any medical need, or travelling to and from work.

However, other police forces in the UK have come under scrutiny for using drones to disperse groups and ensure people maintain social distancing practices.

Derbyshire Police has posted some drone footage they used on Twitter.

The tweet reads: "Despite posts yesterday highlighting issues of people still visiting the #PeakDistrict despite government guidance, the message is still not getting through. @DerPolDroneUnit have been out at beauty spots across the county, and this footage was captured at #CurbarEdge last night."

However, people in the comments section criticised the move.

Someone tweeted: "Hi. Please explain (in terms of epidemiology) exactly what harm these people are doing, taking quiet exercise away from crowds, in small numbers? And if they're doing no harm, leave them alone?"

Another said: "They are in the middle of nowhere and clearly exercising social distancing. Go and do something more useful."

The police force responded by saying: "We understand that people will have differing views about this post, however, we will not be apologetic for using any legal and appropriate methods to keep people safe."

For now, an Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson confirmed the force will continue to patrol the streets to ensure people are sticking to the current government guidelines.

Police have already been out and about in Bristol, stopping cars on Park Street to carry out random checks. Some officers have also been issuing reminders to people not to drive their car to beauty spots.

The police have been given the power to fine and arrest people breaking lockdown rules, but so far none have been issued within Avon and Somerset's force area.
