Will Adrian Peterson allow Derrius Guice to become ‘the guy’ in Washington?

Second-year running back Derrius Guice was forced to forgo his rookie season due to a knee injury in the first preseason game of the year, but it’s all systems go this time around.

Or at least, we can hope.

Mike Florio, with ProFootballTalk, recently brought up an unsettling scenario in which the running back depth in Washington turns into a problem, spearheaded by the stubbornness of veteran RB Adrian Peterson.

“This is going to be a potential problem for the team because Adrian Peterson is not accustomed to giving up touches,” Florio said. “When he was in New Orleans for not very long in 2017, he realized that he wasn’t getting the ball the way that he did in Minnesota. He wanted the ball and he ended up being traded to Arizona, where they had an injury that made him the guy.”

Of course, Peterson wouldn’t even be on the Redskins if it weren’t for the Guice injury in 2018 that created a hole at the position. An August signing made AP the guy in Washington, and he took that job and ran with it.

There’s no reason why Peterson couldn’t end up taking a step back and playing the mentor to Guice while he helps him gain his footing in the league — that would be ideal. However, Florio is right, there’s nothing from his past that suggests AP will do that.
